Jules Monchanin, came from the diocese of Lyon. He was one of the most brilliant intellects among the French clergy, a remarkable conversationalist, at home on every subject, a brilliant lecturer, and a theologian who opened before his hearers marvellous and ever new horizons. He was a profound director of conscience, the counsellor of many thoughtful people, Christians and people of other faiths alike, and finally, for those who crossed his path at a turning point in their lives, a friend of exquisite sensitivity.
